With all the venues in the city specifically dedicated to comedic performances, it’s easy to keep laughing after April Fool’s Day.

It’s hard to decide what’s more satisfying: planning the prank or the look on someone’s face when you shout, “April Fools’!” Whatever it is, the first of the month has been dedicated to practical jokes and hoaxes for centuries. While no one really knows where the custom originated (there’s plenty of theories), April 1 shouldn’t be the only time we make it a point to laugh.

Luckily, with numerous venues solely dedicated to the art of stand-up comedy, Toronto offers plenty of opportunities to roll in the aisles. And what’s better than laughing with friends? If you’re looking for fun group activities in Toronto, here are some new and legendary comedy venues (and shows) to check out.

Yuk Yuk’s

From 1976 to 1978 Yuk Yuk’s shows were held on Church Street. At that point, former stand-up comedian Mark Breslin and long-time friend Joel Axler opened their first physical location on Bay Street. Today, you’ll find the company at 224 Richmond St. W., just off the bustling Queen Street West. While the location has changed a few times (and expanded to other provinces), the funny stuff remains the same. Yuk Yuk’s is the place to see touring comics and uncut comedy.

Ways to Laugh: In April alone, you can see over 25 shows.

The Second City

Icons such as John Candy and Mike Myers both got their start at this legendary improv and sketch comedy troupe. Shows at The Second City feature the best up-and-coming comedic talent performing satirical sketches, along with a mix of characters, songs, and improv. A presence in the city for 50 years, today the company is located at 1 York St.

If you’re looking for more things to do in Toronto after you’re done snort-laughing, take a five-minute walk to check out The Harbourfront Centre. It’s basically around the corner.

Ways to Laugh: Each Sunday at 12 pm, pair your chuckles with mimosas during The Second City’s Improv Brunch.

Comedy Bar(s)

The original basement venue at 945 Bloor St. W. in Bloorcourt Village is pretty iconic. Since opening in 2008, it’s hosted famous comedians such as Tim Meadows and Janeane Garofalo. Local funny girl Allie Pearse even calls The Comedy Bar her second home. Speaking of second homes, the Bar’s second location is on The Danforth at 2800 Danforth Ave.

Ways to Laugh: On April 23, the Bloor Street location is hosting a Marvel vs DC Roast Battle (Fantastic Four vs Justice League).

New Kids on the Toronto Comedy Venues Scene

The Royal Comedy Theatre

Looking for stand-up that pushes boundaries? The Royal Comedy Theatre, which opened in 2021, is your spot for uncensored and unfiltered comedic takes. At 1051 Bloor St. W. (between Dufferin and Ossington), it’s one of the most intimate comedy clubs in Toronto with space for just 60 people in its main room.

Nothing Fancy

Nothing Fancy initially opened on Dundas Street in 2020, running shows on a back patio during the pandemic. Last summer, it took its no frills approach to Kensington Market (276 Augusta Ave), becoming the area’s only comedy venue. It hasn’t taken long for the bar to turn into one of the city’s hottest stand-up stages for nationally touring headliners and local comics alike.

Ways to Laugh: On April 7 and 8, NYC-based comedian Anthony DeVito brings his My Dad Isn’t Danny DeVito show to the stage.

Social Capital Theatre

In the mood for the city’s best Greek food and live comedy shows in Toronto? Head over to The Danforth neighbourhood for dinner and then make your way to 154 Danforth Ave. That’s where you’ll find Social Capital Theatre. Around since about 2015, this second-storey spot is one of the most well-known local improv clubs. It also hosts stand-up and sketch acts.

Ways to Laugh: On April 7, three headliners take the stage at the Best Damn Stand-up Comedy Show.
