Joanna Murray-Smith’s The Female of the Species presents the hysterical hostage experience of celebrity feminist Margot Mason. Inspired by a true-life incident, when author Germaine Greer was held at gunpoint in her own home by an angry student, Mason unexpectedly finds herself gagged and handcuffed to her desk chair. With the arrival of her daughter Tess, son in law Brian, a taxi driver, and publisher Theo, she is suddenly confronted with her “feminist failings”.
