Heart of a Dog

Heart of a Dog

Presented by Nowadays Theatre at Daniels Spectrum

The story is about a stray dog saved by a successful surgeon who runs an operation on the dog by trepanning his skull and giving him human pituitary glands. Later on, the dog gets hired by the Soviet State and starts working for them. Arguably, this timeless story – uniquely – portrays the exploitation of people in any society in which individuals are used and even abused due to particular political intentions of the government.
Mohammad Yaghoubi (the creator of ‘Winter of 88' at the 2020 Next Stage Theatre Festival, 5N Now Magazine) has had the experience of working on this piece twice in Farsi while struggling with boundaries and censorship in Iran. Now, in Canada, far from the harassment of the censorship bureaus, Yaghoubi can pursue his creative vision in directing this piece any way he sees fit.
In this English premier, the most crucial change is that the main character (the dog) will be performed by a woman, which would not be possible in Iran, where a woman's body is a political matter.
