COURSE: Simple Silhouette Puppets & Animation – Analogue Style

COURSE: Simple Silhouette Puppets & Animation – Analogue Style

Presented by Toronto Animated Image Society at Toronto Animated Image Society

Starting with a quick history, this introductory course will cover simple and more elaborate silhouette cutout puppets including alternative methods of construction using easily found materials. This will be followed by an opportunity to get under camera and animate. Materials will be provided and everyone will get the opportunity to see their puppet come to life.

** Please come with design ideas for characters that could be found in a (boreal) forest as we’ll have a background suggesting that environment. We’ll be making puppets to be up to roughly 4 or 5” on their longest side. If you bring a USB stick, you can take home a copy of the raw footage. If you wish to leave an email address with Lynn, she will produce a credited version with sound at a later date and connect you with a link to it on Vimeo where you can download a copy for a limited time.

About the Instructor
A Sheridan Classical Animation grad, Lynn Dana Wilton’s experience ranges from int’l. film fests to studios including Stoopid Buddy (Toronto), Cuppa Coffee, Halifax Film Corp., and Alliance Atlantis for AMC, the CBC, BBC, Family, Nickelodeon, Teletoon, Logo, et. al.  Work includes TV series (“Ultra City Smiths”, “Scout & the Gumboot Kids”, “Rick & Steve: The Happiest Gay Couple In All the World”), specials (“A Miser Brothers’ Christmas”), docs (“Book of Dog”, “Four Faces of the Moon”), ads & interstitials (TVO’s “What’s Inside?”, Sesame Street), indie film & art installations (“Angakusajaujuq:  The Shaman’s Apprentice”, “Biidaaban”), plus personal shorts (“Chrysalis”, “(Re)Cycle”).  She works repeatedly with TAIS and was TPL’s first animator for the “Artist In the Library” residency where she worked with the community to produce “10,000 … Or So”.
“I’m a professional stop-motion nomad. Getting my hands on a range of materials and moving them around under camera is what gets me excited. The best thing about stop-mo is having a connection to something real; whether it’s a fully armatured, three-dimensional puppet or pile of sand on a light table. An audience understanding what your character or material is thinking & feeling is where the real magic happens.”
