Wéi 成为 is a contemporary dance work for a quintet that expresses connection and asks the questions, What makes us who we are? And How do we connect?
Wéi is a contemporary dance for a quintet created by Yvonne Ng, featuring Johanna Bergfelt, Irvin Chow, Mairéad Filgate, Morgyn Aronyk-Schell and Kathia Wittenborn with original music composition by Nick Storring.
成为 - chéng wéi means “to become” in Mandarin. To connect. It’s also a play on the homograph, as wèi also means why. This work explores how a group can ‘write’ a cohesive story together on stage which begins with two questions: What makes us who we are? When do we become us? These led to other inquiries – Is it memory (biological) or is it imitation (experience) or is it all preordained and our fate is set? Or perhaps it is about group dynamics and as we work and play the political dynamic is what gives us direction and makes us who we are. How do we connect? How do we know when we’ve made connection? That leads to the next question of when do we become us? These inquiries and process shaped the creation of Wéi and is embodied in dance.
