Ice-Breaker: The Legacy of the '72 Summit Series

Ice-Breaker: The Legacy of the '72 Summit Series

Presented by Hot Docs at Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema

Fifty years ago, all of Canada came together to watch one of the most intense, unforgettable and controversy-filled hockey series in history. Ice-Breaker: The Legacy of the '72 Summit Series features never-before-seen footage from the eight legendary games that pitted Canada against the Soviet Union in September 1972. This essential hockey doc brings together both archival interviews with Team Canada players and contemporary clips with insightful commentary from the likes of Wayne Gretzky, Harnarayan Singh, Ron MacLean, Vladislav Tretiak and Alison LeClaire, Canada’s ambassador to Russia. The film is based, in part, on the highly praised book Ice War Diplomat by Gary J. Smith, a diplomat at the Canadian embassy in Moscow in the early 1970s. Ice-Breaker brings a vital touchpoint of Canadian culture—and the ultimate nail-biter—to life on screen.
