For the past thirty years, Montreal’s Ensemble Caprice has gained a solid reputation for its innovative, novel programming and vibrant, compelling performances.
Under the tutelage of composer, conductor, flutist Matthias Maute and musical artist and director Sophie Larivière, Ensemble Caprice is renowned for its sensational and earthy interpretations of baroque music, receiving national and international acclaim. The New York Times praised it as a progressive force on the contemporary musical scene.
Their group for this performance including baroque violins, viola, cello, flute, guitar, and recorder will perform a rare and reconstructed set of concertos – Vivaldi’s Les quatre nations/The Four Nations. These were a cycle of recorder concertos describing France, England, India, and Spain, that went completely unnoticed in Vivaldi’s time. While an India score was rediscovered a few years ago, the remainder have been reconstructed by Matthias Maute, based on fragments. For added dimension, each country’s concerto will be paired with a suitable historical Prelude.
