Historic Humber River and James Gardens! (NEW FOR SPRING)

Historic Humber River and James Gardens! (NEW FOR SPRING)

Presented by Toronto History Walks at Eglinton Avenue West and Scarlett Road

Etienne Brûlé was believed to be the first European to travel the Humber River, and the Toronto Carrying-Place on a secret mission for Samuel de Champlain.

During the 1660s, the Humber River provided food and building material for the Seneca village of Teiaiagon. With the rise of York to the east in 1793, grist mills were built and provided the material for Toronto's growth well into the 19th century. Many historians consider the Humber River watershed the life blood of Toronto and southern Ontario. The Humber River is an historic river and tells the tale of not only Toronto, but also of Canada itself.
