SummerWorks Performance Festival

SummerWorks Performance Festival

Presented by SummerWorks at The Theatre Centre

From August 3-13, 2023, SummerWorks is thrilled to present a passionately curated selection of artists and creative collaborators. Celebrating the joys of togetherness, SummerWorks Festival 2023 will feature diversified works through a multitude of formats, including performance art, dance, installation, participatory performance, and community gatherings. The 33rd edition of the festival will be presented in both the East and West ends of Toronto at various venues.

For the first time ever, two-thirds of SummerWorks Presentations feature Shakespearian works, deconstructed and modernised, giving audiences the opportunity to experience these classics in an entirely new framework. Lady M, created by Ramesh Meyyappan and supported by Why Not Theatre, reimagines the tale of Lady Macbeth through a cast of solely deaf artists, exploring the spectrum of emotions that impact Lady Macbeth and her husband. Moving from Zoom to live performance, Gislina Patterson presents i am your spaniel, or, A Midsummer Night's Dream, a queer adaptation of Shakespeare's traditional play that gracefully blurs the lines between irony and tragedy, and Seventh Fire by Lisa Cooke Ravensbergen, an immersive sound installation that invites audience members to sit back, relax, and immerse themselves in a soothing, meditative experience with tea and treats, centred around an Annishnaaabe creation story.
