The COC opens its 2023/2024 season with a rare treat: Beethoven’s one and only opera, Fidelio, returns for the first time in nearly 15 years in a striking, brand-new production helmed by Matthew Ozawa. The Japanese-American director has transported the master composer’s opera to a modern prison, evoking prescient themes of power, corruption, and tyranny, while crystallizing his vision for justice and freedom. COC Music Director Johannes Debus leads a strong cast through Beethoven’s triumphant score, including American tenor Clay Hilley as Florestan, Finnish soprano Miina-Liisa Värelä as his wife Leonore, and Russian bass Dimitry Ivashchenko as the guard Rocco.
All performances take place at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts (145 Queen St. W., at University Ave.). Single tickets will be available to purchase on August 28 at coc.ca or by calling the Four Seasons Centre Box Office at 416-363-8231. There is a cashless— credit/debit only parking lot that can accommodate approximately 200 vehicles underneath the Four Seasons Centre. The parking entrance is on York Street, south of Queen Street.
