In celebration of his centennial year, TIFF Cinematheque presents a retrospective of Senegalese auteur and revolutionary artist Ousmane Sembène in Ousmane Sembène at 100.
Beginning November 15, rediscover Sembène’s profound films such as Ceddo, Xala, and Black Girl, courtesy of Janus Films. As an innovative filmmaker who champions African literary storytelling traditions, Sembène's legacy has been rightfully preserved amongst other filmmakers in the region. Often touching on prolific themes Ousmane actively makes a point of depicting colonialism, tradition, patriarchy, and the portrayal of power– its use and abuse. Sembène’s work exemplifies a personal yet accurate point of view of power within African traditions and forced colonialism.
