Painting Parisian Nightlife: 'In a Café' by Edgar Degas

Presented by Academy of Art History at Women's Art Association of Canada

Edgar Degas, one of the founding members of the Impressionist group, was fascinated by the modern and bustling city of Paris.  He was particularly drawn to its nightlife and his most famous - or infamous - depictions of this subject is In a Café, also known as L'Absinthe.

It may appear rather straightforward at first glance, but there is much more to this painting than meets the eye!

In this lecture, we’ll be peeling back the layers of this remarkable work, not only to better understand its artistic details, but also to learn about the fascinating contexts in which it was produced.
