Inspired by the late 60’s avant-garde artistic movements of John and Alice Coltrane, saxophonist brothers Jonathan and Andrew Kay are continuing the Coltranes’ search for a transcultural theory of artistic expression.
Hailing from Toronto's jazz scene and trained extensively in North Indian classical music in Kolkata, India, the Kay brothers reimagine the Coltranes' legacy through a captivating lens. In 2021, they released their debut album, Dusk Dawn Suite, collaborating with jazz luminaries Roberto Occhipinti and Pat LaBarbera. Their second album features percussionists Dhaivat Jani and Adam Teixeira, integrating global instruments like tabla, esraj, bansuri, shakuhachi, Himalayan singing bowls, guzheng, and Afro-Cuban percussion.
The Coltrane Sutras project combines jazz improvisation, Western harmony, and global music traditions to create resonant soundscapes, embracing decolonial methodologies and pushing the boundaries of musical hybridity.
