The Yorkminstrels Show Choir: "Celebrating 50 Years of Song and Dance"

The Yorkminstrels Show Choir will be “Celebrating 50 years of Song and Dance” on May 4th at 7:30 pm.  The show is being presented by St. George on Yonge (Anglican), 5350 Yonge St. at Churchill Avenue.

In 1974, several members of the long-standing Yorkminstrels Theatre Company, which presented large-scale musical productions in the Willowdale area for several decades, started the Choir with the aim of taking music into the community.  The group performs about 15 concerts a year for seniors’ residences, condo social groups, churches, synagogues, and fundraisers, as well as for civic and private functions. Over the years, the Show Choir has also graced the stage at the George Weston Hall (in the Meridian Arts Centre), Mel Lastman Square, The Zoomer Show and, more recently, at the Willowdale Christmas Market, among numerous others.

The May 4th concert, under the musical direction of Cathy Whiteside, will include selections from both classic and newer Broadway musicals, old favourites and contemporary selections. Long time Show Choir member Sandi Horwitz said: “We don’t stand there with a book. All songs are memorized and there is choreography for many of the numbers. And, because many of us come from a musical theatre tradition, we just love performing.  Best of all, our audiences really enjoy our shows!”  Tickets are $20. A dessert reception follows the show.
