Tafelmusik Chamber Choir presents Bach Motets & Company, the fourth rendition of their intimate concert experience, combining works by the Bach family with motets by two of J.S. Bach’s predecessors at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. Woven between the motets will be traditional sacred Georgian music sung by Ori Shalva, led by Shalva Makharashvili.
The juxtaposition of these two music traditions promises to create a special musical and spiritual conversation. The Bach motets, and those of his family and predecessors, represent the core repertoire of the St. Thomas choir in Leipzig, and have been performed continuously since they were written, now well beyond Leipzig. Georgian polyphonic singing dates back centuries, passing from generation to generation, and has been included by UNESCO on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The intersection of these repertoires is an invitation for contemplation.
“The music of our fourth Bach Motets concert leads us through a life journey: a journey of compassion, grief, tenderness, tribulation, and exultation. I invite you to experience this meeting of two musical cultures and to be transported as the music unfolds around you.” — Ivars Taurins
