COLOURS OF UKRAINE

The Taras Shevchenko Museum opens its 71st season with COLOURS OF UKRAINE, an exhibition of works by two visiting artists from Ukraine, Liubov Senchuk and Karina Voloshko. A country known for its rich cultural heritage, Ukraine has given birth to countless talented artists throughout history. Among the modern-day luminaries in the Ukrainian art scene are Liubov Senchuk and Karina Voloshko, two painters who have been receiving well-deserved recognition and acclaim for their unique and captivating works of art. Rendered with love and reverence for ancestral traditions, the more than 60 paintings in this exhibition reflect Ukraine’s natural beauty, its people, culture, and customs, while exploring the worlds of spirituality, emotion, and the human psyche.

LIUBOV SENCHUK was born in 1980 in the village of Hrushiv,  Lviv oblast. She graduated from the Ivan Trush College of Decorative and Applied Arts in 2000 and from the Lviv National Academy of the Arts in 2006 with the diploma of painter and creator of monumental art. A member of the Youth Association of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine, she has participated in more than 90 group and solo exhibitions. Celebrated for her ability to capture the essence of nature’s beauty on canvas, she explores recurring themes of ancient civilizations, Ukrainian culture, femininity and the mystery of existence. Her artwork is characterized by vibrant colours, intricate details and a deep connection to the natural world. Her paintings often feature landscapes, flora and fauna, all portrayed with a profound sense of reverence and awe. Liubov Senchuk\’s works have been exhibited in galleries both in Ukraine and internationally, earning her recognition and acclaim from art enthusiasts around the world.

KARINA VOLOSHKO was born in 1985 in Kharkiv, Ukraine. After completing her studies at the Kharkiv School of Art in 2006, she received her master’s degree in 2012 from the Kharkiv State Academy of Art and Design, where she studied portraiture and genre painting. Her paintings, which delve deep into the complexities of the human psyche, are often distinguished by surreal and dreamlike imagery. Her lyrical, insightful, and spiritual images base on ordinary, everyday motifs and one of the most intriguing aspects of her art is her use of symbolism and metaphor. A member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine since 2012, Karina has participated in solo and group exhibitions both nationally and internationally. Her works are held in private collections in Ukraine, the USA, China, Holland, Austria, Slovakia, Italy, Romania, Poland, and elsewhere, as well as in museums in Ukraine. Karina currently teaches at the Kharkiv State Academy of Arts and Design.

The opening of COLOURS OF UKRAINE will be held from 2:30 to 5:30 pm on Sunday, October 22 in the gallery of the Shevchenko Museum at 1604 Bloor Street West, Toronto. The exhibition will run until January 19, 2024. Gallery hours are Mon – Wed, Fri: 10 am – 4 pm, Thurs: 12 – 7 pm, and weekends by appointment.
