Private Flowers by HAUI

Private Flowers questions how men might seek solace and affection with one another in violence and war. It unpacks the complexity and nuance of male kinship amidst the brutal forces of the War of 1812, a decisive turning point in Canada and its struggle for independence. This new work sheds light on the injustice faced by those brave enough to love beyond binaries, inviting us to reframe and centralize queer histories and stories. Directed and devised by mixed media artist HAUI featuring choreography performed and co-created with Rodney Diverlus + Jera Wolfe, this project is part of the Toronto History Museums’ Artist Mentorship Showcase: Pride with Mentor Ashley Mckenzie-Barnes.
