Celebrating works by notable historical Ojibwe and Inuit artists, “A Portrait of Turtle Island” explores the myths, legends, visions, and daily lives of Indigenous peoples from across the country!
James Rottman Fine Art is excited to present “A Portrait of Turtle Island”, a celebration of historical Indigenous artists from across Canada. This visual exploration of Ojibwe legends, stories, and visions focuses on two influential Woodland School artists Norval Morrisseau (1931 - 2007) and John Eric Laford (1955 - 2021). The exhibition also highlights notable stonecut print artists from Kinngait (formerly Cape Dorset) such as Pitaloosie Saila, Irene Avaalaaqiaq Tiktaalaaq, and Natsivaar. “A Portrait of Turtle Island” is free to attend. All works shown are available for purchase. For more information check out our website! This vibrant and dynamic show will be exhibited in our gallery space at 830 St. Clair Ave. W from January 13th to March 12th, 2023. We are open Tuesday - Saturday, 11:30AM - 5:30PM, and/or by appointment. We look forward to seeing you.Note: All pieces by Morrisseau currently presented in James Rottman Fine Art Gallery have a documented provenance, being purchased directly from the artist by Ilona-Milian Todd, the former gallery owner of the Art Imperial Gallery, 130 McCaul St., Toronto in the 1980s. The Art Imperial Gallery held a solo exhibition of the artist's work in 1983, with original gallery documentation available.
