The history of The King Black Box began when Drake let go of his Toronto recording studio on Sterling Road. The keys were handed over to TKBB’s executive director, who, with a pregnant belly and a toddler on her hip, spearheaded the construction of the stage, forming Sterling Studio Theatre Cru.

Sterling Studio Theatre ran successfully from 2011 to 2014, staging 33 plays, most of which were part of official TAPA seasons. It also became a home to slam-poets, clowns, musicians, spoken-word artists, and filmmakers. Due to rising property costs, STC joined forces with Unit 102 on Dufferin@Queen; forming The Theatre Machine from 2014 to 2016.

Audiences would brave literal snowstorms to line up next to the Nestlé chocolate factory to witness the raw, artistic troubadour vibes. Here are some of the works The King Black Box is hailing from.
