Located on Yonge Street for the past century the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre was saved from demolition in 1981 by the Ontario Heritage Trust, who still owns and operates the complex today. Built in 1913 for vaudeville, the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatres are unique, because they are two full-sized theatres stacked one on top of the other. Each theatre has its own proscenium stage, fly-house, opera boxes, orchestra pits and balconies, making them the last operating “double-decker” theatre in the world.
Today, Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre hosts a variety of events and occasions including, theatrical productions, awards shows, concerts, dance, fashion shows, location shoots, film premieres, fundraisers, lecture series and stand-up comedy.
